Last Friday, in a case filed by the Marsa Sports Club to stop Santa Veneras village feast organisers from letting off fireworks near to the sports club, Chief Justice Vincent De Gaetano commented that Malta does not yet have any laws to regulate noise pollution.

Commenting on the outcome of this case, Leo Brincat, the Labour Party’s environment spokesman, said today that the lack of laws regulating noise pollution in Malta is shameful.

The Labour MP pointed out that although noise pollution had long been considered to be an inconvenience, recent studies indicated that it could lead to hypertension, high stress levels, tinnitus, hearing problems and sleeping problems.

The Labour MP insisted that the government should have introduced such legislation long ago, especially since Malta is now legally bound to regulate noise pollution by the EU’s Environmental Noise Directive.

The EU has been calling on member states to restrict noise pollution for the last five years, however, unlike other EU countries, the Maltese government has never taken any action in this regard.
