The first flight to Berlin Brandenburg `Willy Brandt’ – the city’s newest airport was operated by Air Malta on Sunday.

Named after former German Federal Chancellor Willy Brandt, the city’s long-awaited Airport (BER) has finally opened its doors and started welcoming airlines and passengers last week.

The airline explained that the airport, just south of the German capital in the state of Brandenburg, has replaced Tegel, (to which Air Malta used to operate) as well as Tempelhof and Schönefeld airports. Berlin Brandenburg is well connected to the city centre with regional trains running approximately every 15 minutes between Berlin Central Station and BER. Travel time is approximately 30 minutes.

The airport is set to become the third busiest airport in Germany surpassing Düsseldorf Airport and making it one of the fifteen busiest in Europe, Air Malta said.

This winter Air Malta said that it is operating a twice weekly flight schedule every Wednesday and Sunday to and from the airport’s Terminal 1.

Berlin is one of the ‘Business Guaranteed’ routes whereby the airline is assuring that it will continue operating to this winter despite these uncertain and testing times, it said.
