The Malta Union of Teachers has said that it has been informed that “in light of a sharp increase in projected positive cases that our country will experience in the coming days, the health authorities have advised the Ministry of Education not to open the schools.

“It seems, however, that the Ministry of Education is ignoring this advice and therefore the MUT feels it should protect educators and students,” it said in a statement.

The MUT stated that the information had been received by the Union in the past few hours and “has been confirmed by a number of different sources.”

The MUT concluded by saying that it is making a formal request for the Government to follow the advice of the health authorities. “If this does not happen, the Union will have no choice but to instruct the members on directives later today.”
