An estimated 10,184, inbound tourists visited the Maltese Islands in April, with the total nights spent amounting to 175,606, the National Statistics Office said today.

The low figures were the result of the travel restrictions in place across many countries due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

6,577 inbound tourists were visiting the islands for holiday purposes, while 2,526 were on business. The NSO noted that Italian residents comprised 40.7% of total inbound tourists.

The average length of stay stood at 17.2 nights. The largest share of guest nights (53.8%) was spent in rented accommodation establishments, with 30.7% of the nights spent in other rented accommodation and 23.1% in collective accommodation.

The NSO said that total tourist expenditure was estimated at €8.8 million, of which €3.9 million were in non-package expenditure and €4.0 million were spent in other expenditure.

Inbound tourists for the first four months of 2021 amounted to 43,433, this was down 88.3% over last year. Total nights spent by inbound tourists decreased by 71.7%, totalling 633,428 nights.

The total tourism expenditure for the same period was estimated at €39.3 million, down 82.5% when compared to the same period in the previous year. Total expenditure per capita stood at €904, increasing from €607 in the same period in 2020, mainly as a result of longer length of stays, the NSO said.
