Two cases of Delta variant identified in Malta, one of which is not travel relatedTwo cases of the Delta variant (Indian) have been identified in Malta, Health Minister Chris Fearne said today.

He said that the second case was not travel related, therefore it is possible that the patient contracted this variant of the virus within the community.

Dr Fearne went on to say that there are currently 3 patients recovering from Covid-19 in Mater Dei Hospital, there are none in any of the other hospitals.

The Health Minister also stated that within the next 6 to 7 weeks, it is forecast that 90% of the new cases in Europe will be of the Delta variant.

He reiterated his appeal for anyone that has not yet had the vaccine to accept the invitation to do so. Dr Fearne added that two-thirds of those in the 12 to 16 age group had accepted the invitation to be vaccinated.
