Another Gozo scheme that goes hand in hand with the existing scheme known as MICE (short for ‘Meetings, Incentives, Conventions, and Exhibition’) has been launched by the Ministry for Gozo
Minister for Gozo Clint Camilleri, while announcing the scheme said that, “through this, the tourism sector will continue to be promoted in Gozo, as this scheme with the full title of – Support in Organising and Hosting MICE Activities in Gozo – is expected to attract a particular tourist niche on the island of Gozo.
Minister Camilleri explained that eighteen months ago the first scheme was launched, which was repeated a few months ago with the aim of incentivising private entities and voluntary organisations to apply for restoration and technological updating work on sites.
He added that six sites were announced last May that were eligible for the scheme.
The Minister went on to say that the financial support that the Ministry for Gozo will be offering is related to the rental of the venue, the provision of food, and even recreational activities synonymous with the VisitGozo brand – cultural visits, sports activities or return trips. He explained that the latter will only be possible for those activities that take place over a period of two days or more.
Ronald Sultana, Director of Tourism and Economic Development at the Ministry for Gozo, explained the criteria for benefiting from this scheme – including that there must be at least 25 non-residents in Gozo participating in the activity. Mr Sultana stressed that for one-day activities, financial support will be 25%, up to a maximum of €2,500, while for activities of two days or more, financial support will be 50%, up to a maximum of €8,500.
The Minister concluded by saying that, “the Ministry for Gozo will therefore now be implementing two schemes on MICE. This is a clear demonstration that we are working, and will continue to drive and consolidate this tourist niche. This also helps to attract different audiences from the traditional ones, while diversifying the Gozitan tourism product.”
