Dr Samuel Azzopardi, running as an Independent, has been re-elected as President of the Gozo Region, the results were announced this afternoon with more than two thirds (68% of all votes) in his favour, taking the leadership away from the Nationalist Party.
Dr Azzopardi, reacting to his election and the votes cast, said with the “majority from both political parties and the independents. Heartfelt thanks. Emotional beyond words.”
Gozo Minister Clint Camilleri in a Facebook post remarked, “for the first time in history, the Nationalist Party lost the leadership of the Gozo Region. Dr Samuel Azzopardi has been democratically elected to continue running this region after being challenged by a candidate selected by the Nationalist establishment.”
He added, “with a strong majority, with the support of Labour, Independent Councillors as well as a substantial number of Nationalist Councillors, who decided to go against the direction of their Party, the Nationalist Party no longer has control of the region.”
Camilleri said, “from the bottom of my heart I wish Dr Azzopardi more work for the benefit of Gozo and Gozitans. I am convinced that together with the Ministry for Gozo, our fellow Gozitan Ministers and Members of Parliament as well as the Mayors and Councillors we will work in synergy for the good of our island.”
