A pencil case made from sustainable material is being distributed to over 4,000 Year 6 students attending public, private and Church schools across Malta and Gozo.

It includes a seed paper which the students can plant. The students will also be receiving the recently launched sustainable development book authored by Trevor Zahra.

The stationery items are made from recycled and sustainable materials, whilst the seed paper is made from recycled paper.

Minister for Energy, Enterprise and Sustainable Development Miriam Dalli and Minister for Education Justyne Caruana said that the initiative is aimed at increasing awareness on sustainable products among the younger generations.

Minister Dalli stressed that ”we are constantly encouraging our children to make sustainable choices through various initiatives as we truly believe that a change in culture and mentality requires children’s participation as well. Today’s children are not only tomorrow’s leaders can help bring about change within their own households.”

Minister Caruana highlighted the importance of a holistic education. ”we want to contribute to greener schools by creating green spaces. We are seeing that in new schools and those we are restoring have an infrastructure that respects the environment.”

She added that, ”most importantly we want to nurture our children from a young age so that, together with educators, we continue to promote sustainable development.”
