“Work on the Gozo Aquatic and Sports Centre is moving fast,’ with iron roof trusses and space frames being installed on the Olympic-size swimming pool, the Ministry for Gozo has said.
Minister for Gozo Clint Camilleri visited the site in Victoria, and said that, `’work on this centre, which covers an area of about 5,000 square metres, is moving fast. Much work has been done in recent months on the interior of the project including internal partitions, mechanical and electrical works and the lining and gutters of the Olympic swimming pool.”
He added that, “in addition, key structural elements have been installed such as the side of the ‘bridge’ leading from the entrance directly to the outdoor sports facilities. Iron roof trusses and space frames can now be placed for roof of the pool.”
He said that the Gozitan people will benefit from this project, as well as also easing the burden of many current Gozitan water polo athletes, who have to cross to Malta every day for training.
The Minister explained that this “massive and long-awaited project” will consist of the construction of an Olympic-sized swimming pool and a number of new facilities, including gymnastics, basketball, badminton, squash, wall climbing, acrobatics, weightlifting, aerobics, yoga, martial arts and other facilities where other indoor sports can be played.
The sports centre will also be equipped with state-of-the-art facilities for all its users, including first aid rooms.
The Gozo Minister concluded by describing this project as “crucial for the field of sports in Gozo” and said that it will be a “major source for economic growth on the island. This is because it is expected to create new niches and attract athletes and groups, both foreign and professional, to Gozo.
