Minister for Gozo Clint Camilleri, has today today accused the Nationalist MP Joe Ellis of “violating the constitution,” saying that it had “further exposed the hypocrisy of the Nationalist Party.”
The Gozo Minister stated that Dr Ellis had used Parliamentary Questions with reference to projects in Gozo for which his own companies had an interest in. He argued that the Nationalist MP should resign over this conflict of interest.
Labour MP Andy Ellul said that, once again the Leader of the Opposition Bernard Grech “had to bow down and give in to pressure, after Joe Ellis made it clear that he would not be resigning.”
They went on to say that “the country cannot afford unbelievable and untenable leadership. The future of this country will continue to be assured by a government led by Robert Abela.”
In response, the Nationalist Party in a statement said that “the company in which Joe Ellis is a shareholder was never in a contract with the government on the road in question but was simply a supplier of bricks to one of the main contractors in Gozo who could use the bricks purchased wherever he wanted. Therefore there is no violation of the Constitution as alleged by Minister Clint Camilleri.”
The PN further stated that, “the charge of conflict of interest is not substantiated because when Ellis spoke in Parliament he actually criticised the length of time it took to complete the project. Ellis complained that the road had already been closed for two and a half years and was far from complete.”
“This, when the responsible Minister has promised that the road would be ready just after the summer, but it has still not been completed,” the PN said.
The Nationalist Party concluded by saying that “instead of accusing Ellis of violating the Constitution, Robert Abela should answer questions about his business with a criminal gang and be clear about whether he himself violated the Constitution while wearing so many conflicting hats while at the same time as being a Member of Parliament.”
