A formal application has been made for Gozo to participate in the 2023 International Island Games sporting event.
The International Island Games were first held in 1985. Currently, 23 islands around the world take part in these biennial games. The next edition will be held in Guernsey.
Gozo formally applied to join this sporting event during a meeting held at the Gozo Ministry between Minister Clint Camilleri and a delegation from the International Island Games Association (IIAG).
Minister Clint Camilleri explained that the largest sports investment that the island of Gozo has ever seen is the construction of an indoor Olympic swimming pool and a new sports pavilion that he stressed, “meets the credentials of today’s times.”
He went on to say that the Ministry for Gozo is committed to continue investing in sport on Gozo, with work to start in the near future on modernising the ta’ Xhajma horse track, as well as the Zebbug shooting range.
The Minister praised the work being undertaken by the Gozo Sports Board, where those sports that were previously poorly followed are now being given the attention they deserve.
Also, through the aids and schemes intended for Gozitan athletes, the Minister said that many athletes are now making a name for themselves, as well as for Gozo on a national and international scale.
The Minister concluded by expressing his wish that the application for Gozo to join this sports community that would eventually benefit Gozitan athletes, would be welcomed by the IIGA Executive Committee.
IIAG Executive Members then spent some time visiting the ongoing works on the site of the Olympic swimming pool and sports pavilion in Victoria.
They remarked that “great progress is being made in the sports infrastructure within Gozo and expressed their appreciation and satisfaction for the enthusiasm and determination of the government so that Gozitan athletes have the best facilities and even compete in the International Island Games.”
