Update – 24-year old Syrian Maher Aljasem of Marsalforn, this evening pleaded not guilty to the murder of 25-year old Fawaz Najem on Saturday evening in Marsalforn.

He was arraigned in the Gozo Court before Magistrate Bridgette Sultana in connection with the murder in Marsalforn on Saturday night.

The accused was also charged with assaulting another Syrian man with a knife and slightly injuring him and breaching the peace.

He pleaded not guilty to all the charges and was remanded in custody. No request was made for bail.

Seven men were being held in connection to the murder, three of them were injured during a fight which took place in a Marsalforn residence.
