Gozo has been accepted to join the International Island Games Association (IIGA) after the Ministry for Gozo had submitted its application back in April this year.

The application was accepted by a unanimous vote at the IIGA annual general meeting held in Guernsey, which is the venue for the Natwest International Island Games in 2023

Gozo Minister Clint Camilleri expressed his satisfaction that the application was unanimously accepted.

“Through these international games, Gozitan athletes will have another platform showcasing their abilities and do honour both for themselves and Gozo,” he said.

Minister Camilleri said that preparations for Gozo to join this association have been ongoing, and mentioned how during the visit by IIAG Executive members to Gozo, they praised the commitment, determination and vision of the Government to boost the sports sector on the island through capital projects and direct fiscal incentives.

Minister Camilleri thanked the Gozo Sports Board, which he said, was instrumental in the successful application and in making Gozo part of this association today.

During the visit to Guernsey, the Gozitan contingent visited several sports facilities being prepared for next year’s games.

The International Island Games were first organised in 1985. There are now 24 islands from around the world which will be participating in these biennial games.
