During the month of June, the Malta Environment & Planning Authority (MEPA) decided 489 applications and received 479 new applications. The net pending caseload at the end of the month was 4,877.

Last month, the Authority processed 117 notifications of development, which, according to the Development Notification Order 2007, do not require a formal application.

In June 2009, MEPA issued 4 contraventions to developers on sites that were breaching Construction Site Management Regulations. These contraventions were related to the lack of hoarding and screening around building sites. These fines amounted to a total of €3,261.09. Inspectors also issued a total of 3 other contraventions, amounting to €2,445.83, to individuals that were found breaching the Littering Act.

During the same month, 59 Stop and Enforcement notices were issued, 48 in Malta and 11 in Gozo. The enforcement section within MEPA closed 43 cases, 36 in Malta and 7 in Gozo. 18 other enforcement cases were sanctioned by a planning permit while another 19 cases were resolved by the owners’ decision to remove their illegal development and comply with the enforcement notice.

The Authority also issued 131 waste carrier permits and 6 waste broker permits; an environmental permit was issued, and another withdrawn. A total of 3 environmental inspections on permitted facilities were also carried out.
