The Friends of the Sick and The Elderly in Gozo (FSEG) has presented the Gozo General Hospital Administration with a number of items that will be used in the various sections of the hospital. This equipment was officially donated by Dr J B Pace, MD FRCS, President of the FSEG to Mr Joseph Scerri, Permanent Secretary at the Ministry for Gozo on behalf of the Minister for Gozo, Giovanna Debono.
Dr Pace explained how the members of his philanthropic society, established in 1988, are voluntarily committed to their objectives in support of the health and geriatric sectors on the island of Gozo. They organise fund-raising activities throughout the year in order to collect funds for their noble cause that has resulted in similar donations of equipment along the years.
While thanking the members of the Friends of the Sick and the Elderly, Mr Scerri said that this generous and positive approach towards the Gozo General Hospital, the Residenza Sant’Anna and the community in general complements the Ministry for Gozo’s continuous endeavours to further enhance facilities and services within the health sector in Gozo. This, in order to provide a better health service on the island itself.
Current works at the Gozo General Hospital include the upgrading of the second Operating Theatre and the setting up of a new Radiology Unit including the procurement of equipment for these two sections. This major project will be co-financed under the European Union’s Structural Funds programme for 2007-2013.
A major project also co-financed by EU funds, was that related to the establishment of a Hyperbaric Unit within the Gozo General Hospital. Apart from serving as an added important safety measure within the diving niche-market for which Gozo is a popular attraction, this unit is also being of service to Gozitan patients who require hyperbaric oxygen treatments. This has resulted in a significant improvement to the service given to such patients who previously had to commute between the islands several times a week.
The Hyperbaric Unit at the Gozo General Hospital will be opening its doors to those employed within the diving centres in Gozo and other interested parties on Friday, the 31st of July 2009 from 4.00pm. to 7.00pm.
