Steward Malta has advised that patients from both the male and female wards at the Gozo General Hospital have now been returned to the wards after they had to be evacuated because of smoke from a fire that broke out on Christmas Day evening,

Steward said that “this was done after the situation was rapidly brought under control and it was ascertained by hospital professionals that it was safe to do so for both patients and staff members.”

Patients had been immediately evacuated safely and transferred to the hospital’s Outpatients Department and to the Barts Medical School within the GGH campus.

Steward Malta expressed its thanks all staff members as well as the hospital’s Emergency Response Team, which immediately activated its contingency plans.

“A big thanks also goes to emergency teams including the CPD, Fire Department and Police forces for their prompt response on site,” Steward said.

Minister for Active Ageing Jo Ettiene Abela, writing on Facebook, said that he had been in constant contact with the Gozo General Hospital administration and thanked all the workers from the hospital and those of the civil protection for their work on Christmas day.
