196 traffic accidents reported in Gozo, a decrease on last yearThere were 196 reported traffic accidents in Gozo during the first quarter of this year, down by 20 or 9.0% on 2022, the National Statistics Office said today. All other districts across Malta recorded an increase.

Of the 196 accidents, 169 were reported as non-injury road traffic accidents, a decrease of 25 or 12.9% on 2022. There were 27 reported with injuries involved, up by 5 or 22.7%. There were no fatalities in Gozo during the first quarter.

Victoria recorded the highest number of accidents with 75, this was followed by Xewkija with 28, Ghajnsielem 22, while Nadur and Xaghra both recorded 17. The others all registered below 10 accidents.

Also in Gozo – Gharb, Qala, Kercem, San Lawrenz, Ghasri and Fontana all registered less than five road traffic accidents.

On a national basis, during the first quarter of 2023, there were four road traffic fatalities, involving four males, the NSO said.

Road traffic accidents and casualties increased by 6.3 and 13.3% respectively when compared to the same period in 2022.

The NSO noted that in the first quarter of 2023, the highest number of road traffic accidents occurred on Thursdays with 621 cases or 16.2% of the total.

Birkirkara registered the highest number of road traffic accidents at 271 cases.
