16,598 contraventions issued by Transport Malta16,598 contraventions for various traffic contraventions across the country have been issued by Transport Malta Enforcement Officers in the first six months of this year.

The Authority in a statement on Saturday, said its “relentless efforts to ensure road safety have resulted in a significant number of contraventions and impoundments, demonstrating its commitment to creating safer roads for all users.”

The breakdown of the contraventions is as follows:

• Contraventions on escooters: 587

• Contraventions on Y plate cabs: 2,069

• Overall traffic contraventions: 13,556

Transport Malta said it also imposed administrative fees on Y plate cabs, amounting to 3,042, “highlighting the Authority’s resolve to maintain high standards of safety and compliance in the public transportation sector.”

Transport Malta’s road safety approach also includes the impoundment of vehicles that are deemed unroadworthy or involved in severe traffic infringements.

The impoundment data for the first half of 2023 is as follows:

• Escooters: 318

• Vehicles: 280

During the school year, Transport Malta also offered a towing service in case a car stops on an arterial road and is obstructing the flow of traffic. A total of 4,944 people made use of this service during the first 6 months.

Transport Malta said it “remains steadfast in its pursuit of road safety and vows to continue its diligent enforcement efforts throughout the year.”

The Authority acknowledged the cooperation of the public in adhering to traffic regulations and encouraged all road users to prioritise safety for themselves and others.
