As from this August, pet owners in Gozo can arrange an appointment free of charge for a health check for their cat or dog with either of the two Veterinary Clinics in Gozo as named below.

This has been made possible through funds awarded to the Gozo SPCA under a Grant from the Ministry for Gozo to check the health of cats and dogs in Gozo.

The vets taking part in this scheme are:

The Galea Veterinary Clinic, Triq Wied is-Seqer, Victoria, Gozo 21 554 257

The Animal Doctor, Triq Karlu Galea, Victoria, Gozo 99 823 658

Personal details of the owner and those of the pet need to be provided before seeing the vet.

The health check will include:

a check of the eyes for any infections or ulcers and the colour of the mucous membranes

a check of the mouth, teeth, and the colour of the gums

a check of the ears for any infections

a check of the skin for any fleas or infections

a check of the spine and limbs for any pain

a check of the heart and lungs with the stethoscope to detect any abnormalities

Gozo SPCA explained that if the owner wishes to trim their pet’s nails, this could also be done.

If no microchip is present that would also be offered as it is a legal requirement for dogs over 4 months old. A microchip will also be offered to cat owners even though it is not yet a legal requirement for cats.

The project will run from August 2023 until July 2024 or until funds are exhausted, therefore it is advised for owners to make their appointment early to ensure that their pet receives this important health check.

Important Note: Gozo SPCA said that following this visit, any diagnoses detected requiring treatment/intervention/medicine, as suggested by the veterinary surgeon, are not covered by this scheme.

It added that, should the pet’s owner wish to proceed with such treatment/intervention/medicine, the costs involved shall be paid directly by the pet’s owner.
