The 2023 statistical report has just been published by MATSEC, which brings to light a number of findings that give insight into how exam-takers are faring in their educational journeys.

Below are a few highlights from this report:

Females sitting for SEC exams are more likely to obtain better grades than their male counterparts

The above difference is less pronounced among students attending independent schools but more evident among those attending either state or church schools

Students in all cohorts are likely to perform better in English than in Maltese

Students in state schools that cater to a wide range of abilities, do not perform as well as students in church and private schools

Males from independent schools performed best in the English language, maths and physics Females are more likely to opt for the more difficult paper 2A, which makes them eligible for higher grades

Males are more likely to request exam access arrangements than females – a difference also explained by research that shows that males are more likely than girls to be diagnosed with conditions (not that they are more susceptible, but rather symptoms present themselves differently)

2023 registered the highest ever figure of requests for EEAs; 762 candidates and 15% of students registered for the exams
