A juvenile Loggerhead Sea turtle has been rescued just off the coast of Gozo this week. The turtle was spotted by a couple out on a jet ski.

Nature Trust – FEE Malta – Gozo Section said that the couple observed the turtle for quite a while and realised that it was not diving, with the turtle flipping upside down at one point. ”This is not normal behaviour and indicates that something is wrong with the turtle.”

They brought the turtle in to Mgarr Harbour to hand over to one of the Gozo volunteers, the turtle has been named Jaxon and is now under NTM – FEE Malta’s care at the Xrobb L-Ghagin Nature Park and Wildlife Rehab Centre.

The NGO said that on closer inspection Jaxon appears to be underweight and very malnourished, so it’s possible it has been unwell for quite a while. ”A big thank you to the couple that took the time to save Jaxon.”

All the animals rescued by Nature Trust – FEE Malta are protected species and it is illegal in Malta to harm them or keep them as pets.

Their volunteers have wildlife handling permits and training as well as equipment in order to rescue these creatures.

NTM advised that if anyone spots any of the wild animals that it rescues injured or in danger, please call the Wildlife Rescue Team Malta on 99999505.

”A massive thank you always goes to the public who call us when they notice an animal in distress, our vets, and our dedicated rescue and rehabilitation volunteers,” said NTM.

The Wildlife Rehab Project is carried out by Nature Trust – FEE Malta Wildlife Rescue Team Malta and is supported by the ERA – Environment & Resources Authority, Lottoland Malta, Melita and Megastore.
