Following the recent obscenity which saw the Planning Authority defying Court rulings and sanctioning illegal developments in Sannat, a number of NGOs are calling a Press Conference in front of Castille to demand urgent and decisive action to restore the rule of law in our country.
Next Saturday, the 31st of August, representatives from eight NGOs will be meeting in front of Castille to urge the Prime Minister to “take immediate action to put a decisive end to the injustices and absurdities that have become synonymous with our planning system.”
The NGOs argued that the “Planning Authority has essentially set itself and the developers above the law and the Court, making a mockery of justice and undermining the rule of law in the process. The implications of all this are extremely serious, as the very foundations of our democracy have been shaken and citizens are suffering gross injustice.”
“In this Press Conference, we will also once again be calling for an immediate reform of the absurd appeals law. After more than one year since the Prime Minister had vowed to reform this flawed law, the reform has yet to be seen,” the NGOs said.
They stressed that “the current appeals law allows irregular developments to continue unabated while an appeal is underway. This means that once a development is declared illegal following the appeal decision, the development would have already been completed, rendering the appeal process totally futile.”
