Dr Charles Daniel Saliba, an academic at the Malta College of Arts, Science & Technology, Gozo Campus, was invited to deliver the keynote address at this year’s Polyglot Conference conference in Valletta.

The Polyglot Conference is an annual gathering of polyglots, linguists, language professionals and enthusiasts from around the world. This year’s event took place between the 7th and 8th of November, in celebration of the Malta’s rich linguistic heritage.

In his talk, titled ‘The History of the Maltese Language,’ Saliba gave an overview of the historical developments that led to the formation of the Maltese language and discussed aspects of its lexicon, morphology and phonology.

Saliba commented, “I was delighted when I heard that this international conference was going to be held in Malta this year. It was an honour to be invited by Mr Richard Simcott, the world-renowned polyglot who is the Polyglot Conference’s founder and lead organiser, to deliver the keynote address. It was also very exciting to see a vibrant community of language enthusiasts from around the globe who are interested in our language gathering in Malta.”

Saliba also presented Mr Simcott with his two latest publications, Learning Maltese 1 and Learning Maltese 2, which are part of the Maltese as a Foreign Language for Juniors series, as well as a copy of a trilingual book (in Portuguese, English and Maltese) that he co-wrote with Prof Rui Soares, President of the International Association of Paremiology, Provérbios Europeus / European Proverbs / Proverbji Ewropej.

Dr Saliba gave each participant in the intensive course in Maltese Language held a day before the conference a complimentary copy of Maltese Grammar Essentials in Context 1, part of Level A1 of the Maltese for Foreigners Series.
