Nature Trust FEE Malta recently organised the 19th edition of the EkoSkola Parliament under the auspices of the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Dr Anglu Farrugia.

52 EkoSkola students from 26 schools gathered to address the key challenges of the Malta Vision 2050 and potential climate change impact scenarios.

The EkoSkola Parliament Session is the annual event that brings together young policy makers, participating in the EkoSkola programme, face to face with the country’s official policy makers in a positive parliamentary debate about ways of improving the quality of life in our country.

Students, representing the diverse EkoSkola network, addressed several members of Parliament that were present for the sitting following an invite sent by the students.

During the sitting students had the opportunity to elaborate on several concerns pertaining to the Malta Vision 2050. Themes discussed include Protecting nature; Affordable homes; Cleaner air and less traffic; Improving schools; Better healthcare; Preserving culture; Smart use of land and sea; Exciting jobs for the future; Public transport improvements and Preparing for global changes.

NTM said that in a motion that was unanimously approved by all representatives present in the chamber, EkoSkola students “reiterated the right to be consulted in the process not only as a basic right as part of the UN’s Convention on the Rights of the Child but on the premise that whatever decisions are taken today will affect their quality of life as citizens of Malta today and in the years to come, perhaps even beyond 2050.”

Among the key highlights of the event was the tabling of a series of recommendations compiled by the students during the 13th EkoSkola Young Peoples Summit, held earlier this year in collaboration with the Climate Action Authority.

For the past 23 years, Nature Trust – FEE Malta said that it has remained unwavering in its commitment “to champion the voices of children and youth, empowering them to be protagonists in shaping their future through its flagship Eco-Schools programme. This transformative initiative has led to measurable improvements in school sustainability practices, student engagement, and national education policies.”
