The Victoria Primary School in Gozo was the winner of the Commercial and Public Buildings Award in the 2024 Malta Architecture and Spatial Planning (MASP) Awards held last Wednesday.

Organised by the Planning Authority under the patronage of President Myriam Spiteri Debono, the MASP Awards celebrate design excellence in the built environment and recognise projects that shape Malta’s future while respecting its past.

This innovative school design for Victoria was recognised in the awards for its blending of “child-centric aesthetic with vibrant colours and integrated landscaping, while respectfully preserving the original modernist building by architect Joseph Huntingford.”

It was also noted that “sustainability was paramount, incorporating natural light and traditional bamboo louvers for occupant well-being. Uniquely, the project showcases significant archaeological discoveries – a Roman quarry, a presumed Punic tomb, medieval farmhouse foundations, and ancient water reservoirs – directly within the school’s educational spaces.”

The Planning Authority said that these awards celebrate the meticulous work and innovation of the people behind these iconic projects – from established professionals to graduating students.
