Luke Said, Nationalist Party Candidate for Gozo, has highlighted the plight of Gozitan farmers, with “skipped deadlines meaning that Gozitan farmers are still waiting for the new water system.”

He stated that managing Gozo’s water resources wisely is more urgent than ever. “Our infrastructure must not only cope with climate challenges but conserve every precious drop.”

Said explained that the ‘Second-Class Water System’ is a recycled water network that treats domestic wastewater at a dedicated “polishing plant” and delivers safe, non-potable water directly to farmers via smart dispensing points. It reflects circular economy principles – “but it needs to work, not remain a theory.”

Luke Said noted that since 2017, “Parliament has heard promises and excuses” and some of the missed deadlines include:

March 2017: “The plant is in an advanced stage.”

August 2018: “Water is being distributed from 3 points.”

March 2022: Project supposedly completed.

October 2022: “The project is complete.”

November 2022: “Actually, it’s not.”

Q3 2023: Another phase due.

Q3 2024: Expected to start operating.

March 2025: Now it’s “mid-2025.”

“And now it’s July 2025. Another dry summer – still no working system, he said.

The PN candidate called on the Water Services Corporation and the Ministry for the Environment to “stop shifting deadlines. Stop dodging responsibility. Finish this project that half of Gozo’s farmers have waited far too long for.”

“They deserve access to water – not more excuses, and definitely not more prayers for rain,” concluded Luke Said.
