BirdLife Malta said that in its work rescuing injured birds, it values the support of entities such as the Malta Ranger Unit (MRU), who often come across injured birds while patrolling the islands.
BLM said that this was just the case with a lucky Eurasian Hobby found outside Marsalforn, Gozo, in May this year.
The bird had sustained an injury to one of its wing joints. BirdLife Malta said that vets could not confirm the presence of lead pellets, leaving the cause of this unusual injury a mystery.
MRU rangers secured the bird and handed it over to BirdLife Malta’s conservation team, who took it for veterinary attention to establish a rehabilitation strategy.
Three months later, the Hobby had fully recovered and was ready for release. BirdLife Malta said that “it was a real pleasure to invite the MRU rangers themselves to carry out the release on Comino earlier this month.”
BirdLife Malta gave a “big thumbs up” to the MRU “for their support in helping our wild birds. This Hobby could easily have ended up in the wrong hands, but instead it was given a second chance at life.”
