BirdLife Malta is urging the public to sign a petition that calls for the end of “lead poisoning.” It warned that “time is running out. This is your last chance to make your voice heard.”
The NGO stated that every year, 1 million birds die from lead poisoning in Europe, with 135 million more at risk.
It said that “lead contaminates nature and threatens human health as well, especially children. There is no safe level of exposure, and this harm is 100% preventable.”
In 2025, the European Commission proposed a ban on lead in ammunition and fishing weights, but loopholes and delays could still allow this toxic pollution to continue for years.
However BirdLife International noted that “loopholes remain” and that it ” falls short of addressing lead pollution from sports shooting effectively.”
BLM stressed that “the solution exists. Safe, lead-free alternatives are already available. What’s missing is the political will to act faster and stronger.”
“That’s why your voice matters now,” said BLM. The petition closes January 31st: this is the final push to demand a ban that “truly protects people, wildlife, and the environment.”
BirdLife Malta said that “every signature counts, please make the difference.” Sign the petition by clicking here.
