The Bishop of Gozo has joined the Archbishop of Malta in reacting to the comments of the President of the United States on the Pope.

In a statement, the Diocese of Gozo said that ”the Bishop of Gozo Anton Teuma, shares the concerns of the Archbishop and the Church in our country, communicated earlier today, regarding the comments made by the President of the United States regarding what Pope Leo XIV said on the priority of peace over any attempt at war.”

The Bishop said, ”we cannot stop repeating the words of the Pope” at the Vigil on Saturday evening: “Such an idolatry of ourselves and of money! Such a display of force! Enough of war! True strength is seen in those who are shown in serving life.”

He highlighted that Saint John XXIII, with evangelical simplicity, wrote: ‘From peace everyone gains: individuals, families, peoples, the entire human race.’ And echoing the direct words of Pius XII, he added: ‘Nothing is lost in peace. Everything can be lost by war’ (Encyclical Letter Pacem in terris, 62).”

‘Bishop Teuma concluded by saying that, ”we continue to pray for the Pope – currently on a visit to the African continent – in all his efforts for peace in our world, which reflects the mission of the Gospel that the Church is called to fulfil.”
