This weekend, Il-Hagar Museum in Gozo is presenting another two free events that it said, ”promises to be very interesting.”

The first, taking place this Friday, the 17th of April, at 7.30pm, consists of the first of a series of lecture-recitals organised by the Museum to commemorate the 200th anniversary of Ludwig van Beethoven’s death in 1827.

Devised, led and presented by Francis Camilleri, this series of five lecture-recitals spread over two years will focus on the eminent composer’s thirty-two piano sonatas, offering insights into works that have become a staple of the piano repertoire.

Taking place at the Aula Mgr Giuseppe Farrugia, at the back of St George’s Basilica, this first lecture-recital will serve as an introduction to the subject, discussing the context and selected examples that best exemplify Beethoven’s developing style, from the early youthful sonatas to the late introspective works.

The museum said that the second event for the weekend, taking place on Saturday, at 11am, is a walkthrough of the Harmony in Contrast exhibition at Il-Hagar, where a ”meticulously” curated selection of paintings, etchings and sculptures is on temporary display.

The exhibition explores the balance between opposing elements such as light and shadow, form and void, and tradition and modernity. The session will be led by the artists themselves, Valerio Schembri and Paul Stellini.
