Sannat is getting ready for the annual wine festival. This year’s edition, the 6th of its kind, will take place on Saturday, the 2nd of May.

Following the success of previous wine festivals, the Sannat Local Council said that it is ”delighted to host the festival in Saint Margaret Square as an authentic celebration of wine, local culture and music.”

For the Sannat community, the festival strengthens the ties that the village has with Montefiascone in Italy from where all the wine consumed during the festival is imported. Both locations, Sannat and Montefiascone are united through the special patronage and devotion to Saint Margaret, their patron Saint.

Montefiascone in Italy has a strong tradition of superior wines that come from vines grown in the region. Philip Vella, mayor of Sannat commented that ”the name of the festival is a node to Montefiascone. EST! EST!! EST!!! pays homage to this heritage and is rooted in a well-known legend.”

As recounted by Mayor Philip Vella, ”a German bishop travelling to Rome once sent his servant ahead to identify the best wines along the journey. Each time a good wine was found, the servant marked it “Est” (meaning “it is”). Upon reaching Montefiascone, the wine proved so exceptional that it was marked “Est! Est!! Est!!!”

The Council said that the festival will officially open at 7:30pm, promising an evening of entertainment and atmosphere. This year’s programme includes live performances by StraitAhead, a dynamic Gozitan band known for their energetic stage presence, and Kurt Calleja, one of Malta’s most popular singer-songwriters, who will headline the event.

Admission to the festival is free of charge, and parking will be available within the nearby school grounds for those attending by private vehicle.

The event is supported by the Ministry for Gozo and Planning and the Gozo Regional Council.
