The Planning Authority said that it is once again accepting Expressions of Interest for a grant scheme aimed at supporting the restoration and conservation of scheduled buildings located outside Urban Conservation Areas (UCAs).

Following the earlier call issued this year, €1 million remains available to support the restoration of some of Malta’s most significant built heritage.

Opening today, 2nd July, eligible applicants may receive grants of up to €100,000 for Grade 1 scheduled buildings and up to €50,000 for Grade 2 scheduled buildings. In cases of multiple ownership, each co- owner may benefit from funding of up to €15,000, while consolidated applications may qualify for the maximum grant available under the scheme.

The PA explained that the scheme is dedicated to buildings that have been formally scheduled for their historical or architectural significance but are located outside Urban Conservation Areas, ensuring that heritage properties across the Maltese Islands continue to receive the investment and protection they require.

Through this initiative, eligible applicants may receive financial assistance for conservation and restoration works that preserve the architectural integrity and historic character of these buildings, in line with established conservation principles. Eligible interventions include the restoration of facades, the repair of traditional timber apertures, stonework conservation, and other restoration works approved by the Planning Authority.

The Executive Chairperson of the Planning Authority, Johann Buttigieg, said, “this scheme reinforces the Authority’s commitment to safeguarding our built heritage beyond Urban Conservation Areas. By extending support to scheduled buildings across the Maltese Islands, we are encouraging more property owners to invest in the careful restoration of structures that form an integral part of Malta’s cultural identity.”

Interested applicants must first register their Expression of Interest through the Planning Authority’s online portal in accordance with the scheme guidelines. They will then be required to submit the necessary documentation, including details of the proposed works.

Applications will be assessed against the established eligibility criteria and processed in the order in which they are received, with funding allocated until the available budget has been exhausted.

Expressions of Interest opened today and close at 9am on 9 July, or earlier if the available funds are fully allocated. Applications will be processed on a first-come, first-served basis, and late submissions will not be considered.
