Thirteen of the Dwejra boathouse applications rejectedIn today’s meeting of the Malta Planning and Environment Authority, the board rejected thirteen of the seventeen applications and deferred four on the sactioning of boathouses that had been illegally built at Dwejra.

Yesterday, several NGOs issued a joint statement in which they raised objections to the boathouses and advised that as a protest they would not be attending todays meeting.

Although I commend MEPA for refraining from sanctioning several of these illegal boathouses, I cannot help but wonder whether the illegal structures will ever be removed or not. Last time around, I seem to remember that there was some excuse about the bulldozers damaging the local flora!

However, if this miracle does occur, there are several other unsightly buildings there which could also do with a bit of bulldozer work as I am sure they were also built without permission. For example the large building next to the chapel – it is too ugly to call a villa – should definitely be removed, or at least have the top floors dismantled, the double storey shack facing the square next the concrete ‘monster’ and the shell on the side of the road opposite the upper parking ground should also both be removed forthwith.

I mention just the tip of the iceberg, there are of course numerous other disgraceful extensions and add-ons spoiling what could be a wonderful site.

At lease this is a step in the right direction.

Thank you, whoever was sitting on the board this morning.
