The Ministry for Gozo has said the government’s decision on the rehabilitation of the former landfill site at Qortin, is another initiative towards making Gozo into an ecological island to be enjoyed by Maltese and Gozitan families, as well as tourists.
They said that the granting of permission yesterday by the MEPA board, will lead to what will be seen as a major environmental change to the Qortin site, which will then complement the surrounding natural environment. This was made possible after the site was closed in 2004 and the disposal of waste finished there. Following this the process began of removing the gases, which then brought about an improvement in the air quality.
“The closure of the landfill in Qortin meant the end of what was the largest source of pollution in Gozo. This was one of the most important steps that had been taken to enable government to move closer to their vision of an ecological island of Gozo.”
