The new facilities at the new Boys’ Secondary School within the Gozo College will be in use for the first time in September, when approximately 750 children resume their secondary studies following their summer break.

As the works in the last phase approaches completion, the Minister for Gozo, Giovanna Debono, together with Frederick Azzopardi, Parliamentary Assistant within the Ministry for Gozo and Stephen Spiteri, Parliamentary Assistant within the Ministry of Education, Employment and Family, made an on-site visit. They were accompanied by Mr Ray Fenech and Mr Charles Farrugia, officials from the Foundation for Tomorrow who are coordinating work on this project in collaboration with the Ministry for Gozo.

The 2009-2010 school year had already started using the first section of the new school, which incorporates science laboratories, art, design and technology classes. Now, following the demolition of the remaining classes of the old school, all students will be using the new facilities which the new school provides, from the beginning of the new school year.

The new facilities will include forty-five classrooms, nine science laboratories, three food-laboratories, a textile room, three design and technology workshops, a classroom for teaching of the Arts, a Library and facilities for the teaching of physical education. There will be several other rooms that will also be added for the benefit pf the Gozitan students. These will include a clinic and another room that will be used as a counseling room for students as well as for meetings with parents.

The new school will also offer space for social and educational activities in a spacious lounge located on the third floor of the school. Other spaces have been prepared for the use of teachers and the school administrators, which are to benefit from new furniture to complement the spacious and modern interior of the new school. Newly installed lifts will provide easy accessibility to all of the facilities in the new school. The project is also providing space for parking and will currently accomodate around 120 vehicles.

The Minister for Gozo, Giovanna Debono, said that the facilities of the new school will be utilising state-of-the-art technology, including solar energy, and other initiatives such as sun pipes, the use of double glazing and insulation, using established practices to achieve a reduction of 20 percent in emissions of carbon dioxide.

Both the Minister for Gozo and Stephen Spiteri also applauded the commitment of the Foundation for Schools in their pursuit of this ambitious project to improve Gozo’s schools.
