A domestic architecture exhibition, was this morning inaugurated on the occasion of the 21st anniversary since the opening of the National Archives in Victoria and for Archives Awareness Week. During the same event a digital laboratory was was also inaugurated, with an investment of around € 10,000, which will be used to digitize archive documents in Gozo.

In her speech during the ceremony of inauguration, the Minister for Gozo, Giovanna Debono, said that the new digital system will mean that Gozo will be able to update the archives with new technology information as Malta had already been doing for some time. The Minister went on to say that this will mean that Gozo’s archival heritage could be preserved more efficiently and offer easier access, possibly via the internet in the near future.

The Minister for Gozo, said that the material on display at the exhibition was just a small example of what was actually stored within the archives and that it reflected the domestic architectural heritage in Gozo, showing that despite the size of the island, it offers beautiful and interesting areas to see. The Minister added that the exhibition has not only historical relevance, but shows also the social interests to Gozitans.

The National Archivist, Charles Farrugia and Assistant National Archivist, Rev. Dr Joseph Bezzina, gave more information on the exhibition features, as well as some details of the history of the last 21years of the National Archives in Victoria.

The domestic architecture exhibition in Gozo – declining legacy, includes documents relating to buildings in Gozo from 1575 onwards as well as quality photos showing the domestic architecture from the past.

The exhibition will remain open to the public until Saturday, the 22nd of October, Monday to Saturday between 8.00am and 1pm. A full catalogue of details of the exhibition is also available.
