1. The Capuchin Friars of Victoria recently celebrated the feast of St Francis. Bishop Nikol Cauchi celebrated Mass and delivered the homily. After Mass, he blessed animals and set free two doves he had been presented with during Mass as a sign of peace.

Fr Guardian Carm Dimech led a concelebrated Mass during which six people joined the Franciscan Secular Order, while two others made their profession as members of the same order.

2. Friday, 22nd October, 2010 was a night to remember for brass and vocal enthusiasts. Brillante – a brass and vocal evening was held at the Cittadella Centre for Culture and Arts – Gozo Citadel (Ministry for Gozo). The repertoire included pieces from different periods ranging from Mozart’s opéra comique to Gershwin’s Summertime and beyond. The soloists of the evening were George Camilleri and Daniel Gauci both on Euphonium accompanied by BrassTubes. Soprano Marouska Attard was accompanied on the piano by Antoine Theuma and also by BrassTubes. The conductor and artistic director of the event was Maestro Mark Gauci. Brillante’s performers were true professionals and took their work very seriously. The pieces performed demanded high technical abilities, stamina and above all great musicality.

3. Final preparations were underway at Cemeteries all over the isalnd of Gozo as time was high for all Saints Day, November 1. Marble maker, Raymond Bonello of Xaghra, installed a tomb monument at the Santa Marija Cemetry at Xewkija, on Tuesday October 19, at 5.00 p.m.

4. Around 50 people recently donated blood at Dar tal-Irtiri Padova near St Anthony church, Ghajnsielem. National Blood Transfusion Service (Malta) manager Gino Degiorgio thanked donors for their generosity and urged other people to donate blood.

A wreath-laying ceremony to mark the 62nd anniversary of one of the worst sea tragedies, in which 23 people drowned, was held at the monument at Zewwieqa, Mgarr, on Sunday, October 31.

Among those placing flowers was Marija Portelli, 81, sister of George Curmi, the youngest person who lost his life. He was 17. Qala archpriest Rev. Dr. Joe Zammit celebrated Mass on board the Ta’ Pinu ferry at the site of the tragedy.

Relatives and friends threw flowers into the sea near Hondoq ir-Rummien Bay as a mark of respect.

The incident happened onOctober 30, 1948, when a luzzu carrying 27 passengers attempted to cross from Marfa to Gozo in bad weather. The boat overturned and only four survived.
