The Ministry for Gozo has launched a funding scheme with an allocation of € 1.2 million for Eco-Gozo projects by Local Councils. Through this scheme, Council and Administrative Committees may benefit from a grant of up to 95% of the total cost up to €70,000 for projects which enhance the sustainability of their locality.

This scheme was announced by the Minister for Gozo, Giovanna Debono, during a news conference held today, which was attended by a number of Mayors, councilors and council administrative staff.

Local councils represent communities at a local level. They are positioned well to respond to the needs of the localities they administer, and ensuring that action for the improvement of their communities’ quality of life is effective. Therefore, the Ministry for Gozo is providing the opportunity for Local Councils to directly engage in the implementation of the eco-Gozo project, and more specifically in the short-term measures identified in the document “Eco-Gozo: A better Gozo Proposed action 2010-2012”. The Minister invited all Local Councils in Gozo to select projects that can be carried out in their respective localities that comply with the requirements of those proposals listed in the plan of action. She added that the projects and initiatives considered will be those who really make a difference in their locations and be of benefit to the residents. The Minister also urged the different Local Councils to join forces to carry out projects together.

Applications for projects under this scheme will be accepted up to the 23rd December 2010. In the proposal, applicants must explain how the project will be beneficial to Gozo and to the Gozitan society. This is one of the conditions that will have an important impact on the decision of the committee when it evaluates any applications.

The projects that will benefit from this scheme will be announced by January 2011, and they will be implemented by November 2011.
