Updated – The Jesuit Fathers in Malta have teamed up with their Italian confreres on a campaign to collect unwanted mobile telephones (working or faulty) in support of our Jesuit Mission works in Africa.

The aim is to support two particular projects.

1. NYUMBANI ORPHANAGE for children suffering from AIDS in Nairobi, Kenya for children who have been infected with AIDS through their parents, who die with AIDS. The home does not only provide shelter, support, education and all it takes to give these children a future. It also provides them with the needed medical care to deal with their AIDS infection. Hundreds of children have been snatched from an early death thanks to this care.

2. SOLAR OVENS FOR POOR FAMILIES IN TCHAD These are a wonderful means of helping poor families in Tchad. They save women from trudging for the greater part of day in search of firewood for cooking leaving their children behind on their own in their villages. Thanks to the ovens, mothers can remain at home, stay longer with their children whilst elder siblings, who normally stay at home with the very young ones, are can attend school. The whole family is thus helped remain together in a more healthy way. In the process, scarce and precious trees are saved from being cut down and destroyed, thus saving the environment and the eco-system in that country.

These projects, as well as others, are partly financed by mobiles collected from Europe.

What happens to the collected mobiles. We take them to Italy, where they are added to the mobiles collected from that country. The usable mobiles are distributed among poor villagers in Africa, thus empowering them to better their life-conditions through better communication. Studies have proved that increased mobile communication is a decisive factor in the development of poorer countries. The unusable mobiles are forwarded to recycling companies against payment. The money thus generated is channelled to fund the above and similar development projects run by the Jesuits. Thanks to a previous similar campaign in Malta last year, more than 9,000 euro were raised.
