The stories covered in this weeks issue are:

1. On Saturday, May 28, H.L. Mgr Mario Grech, bishop of Gozo, presided over the ordination of seven young men at the Gozo Cathedral. In front of a congregation that packed the church to capacity, the bishop laid his hands on Krystof Buttigieg (Qala), Simon-Mario Cachia (St George-Rabat), Samuel Grech (Ghajnsielem), Stephen Magro (Franciscan Minor), John Meilak (Cathedral), Trevor Sultana and Franklin Vella (both of Xewkija), ordaining them to the priesthood.

In his homily, Bishop Grech spoke of the challenges facing the priests of today in a society where faith is dwindling and where relativism had taken the place of God and the supreme truths. Society is nonetheless still in need of the priest. With the power to offer the Sacrifice of the Body and Blood of Christ as well as the power to forgive sins, the priest can help society to rediscover the real source of truth and happiness.

In was one of the largest ordinations to take place in Gozo in recent years and it is unlikely to be surpassed in the foreseeable future. About 110 priests, some of whom travelled from as far as the United States, concelebrated with the bishop. At the end, the congregation gave a long standing ovation to the newly ordained.

2. Outgoing US Ambassador Douglas Kmiec recently called on the Salesian Sisters in Victoria.

Prof. Kmiec met Sr Rose Oliveri who hails from the US. She has been at the Salesian convent in Victoria for over 40 years. Prof. Kmiec also visited the Arka Respite Centre in Ghajnsielem, where he was welcomed and taken round by the director, Mgr Manwel Curmi, and his assistant Fr Michael Galea.
