July’s outbound tourists figures up by 6.4% on last year

Outbound tourist trips during July were estimated at 34,233, up by 6.4 per cent over the comparative month in 2010. Same-day visitors were calculated at 4,273: These figures were issued today by the National Statistics Office.
Outbound tourist trips towards EU destinations accounted for 90 per cent of the total and amounted to 30,727. Trips towards EU countries increased by 2,219 (8 per cent) and were the result of an increase in the British and German markets. Italy remained the most visited destination among Maltese outbound tourists, albeit a decrease when compared to the previous year. Trips towards non-EU destinations declined, similar to the previous months, and stood at 3,506.
As in previous years, the majority of outbound tourist trips were carried out by males, who accounted for 54 per cent of the total. Most tourists fell within the 25-44 age bracket (12,004) and were followed by the 0-24 age-group (9,927). Same-day visitors increased by 653 when compared to the previous year, to 4,273.
Outbound tourism throughout this seven-month period stood at 166,722, an increase of 12 per cent with respect to the previous year. EU outbound trips registered upward changes and were estimated at 148,418. EU destinations comprised 89 per cent of the total, whereas Non-EU trips declined and numbered 18,304. The most popular destination among Maltese outbound tourists was Italy, with the UK coming a close second. Together, these two destinations accounted for 57 per cent of total outbound trips.
Most outbound tourists (40 per cent) fell within the 25-44 year-old age group, followed by the 45-64 age bracket. These numbered 67,176 and 53,137 respectively. Female tourists stood at 72,490, or 43 per cent of the total, despite an increase of 17 per cent when compared to last year. Out of 188,314 outbound visitor trips, same-day visitors were estimated at 21,592 ?
