Mr Markus Klaushofer, new Chief Executive Officer at Malta International Airport, today announced that the airport had achieved a record 3.5 million passenger movements in 2011. “In effect, this means an increase of 6.5% over 2010, which in itself was a record year which had then registered an increase of 12.8% over 2009.”

Mr Klaushofer said this when he welcomed the Minister of Finance, the Economy and Investment, the Hon. Tonio Fenech and the Parliamentary Secretary for Tourism, the Environment and Culture, the Hon. Mario de Marco to the airport.

The CEO said that the Company will be announcing its traffic results for 2011 in detail later on this month. He insisted that “this result was possible due to the hard work of our staff, the commitment of our airlines and all the ground work and efforts which our airline marketing department carries out in conjunction with the government and the Malta Tourism Authority.”

When commenting about 2012, Mr Klaushofer added that the coming year is setting out to be a challenging one, especially in so far as seat capacity is concerned and Malta Airport is working with all stakeholders concerned to be prepared. “For the company, it is also going to be an eventful year, in which we celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Terminal inauguration as well as the inauguration of SkyParks Business Centre.”

He concluded by thanking Minister Fenech and Parliamentary Secretary de Marco for their visit, especially on his first official day as CEO.
