The Gozo Tourism Association issued a statement this afternoon on behalf of its members coming from its seven sectors, regarding the major road network construction works currently being carried out on Gozo. These works are mainly being effected on the main road linking Xewkija to Victoria as well as the road leading to the Village of San Lawrenz.

The GTA said that “whilst acknowledging the importance of upgrading the touristic product on Gozo, that includes the roads network, the Gozo Tourism Association is very much concerned about the disruptions stemming from this project that are reportedly leading to loss of business for both touristic and retail outlets.”

The Gozo Tourism Association continued that it “has always upheld the principle that access is the way to success. This does not only refer to access between the islands but it also includes access on the Island itself. The diversions and traffic management measures conducted in relation with current works are not adequately meeting with traffic flow through these main arteries and are also proving to be confusing for both domestic as well as foreign tourists.”

In this regard, the Association said it “is calling on the Ministries and entities responsible and involved in these roads works in order that they may be able to better co-ordinate and more efficiently manage the prevailing situation. The Gozo Tourism Association also insists that adherence to set time frames is a priority that cannot be overlooked.”

The Gozo Tourism Association concluded that it “appeals for the consideration of all entities concerned in order to minimise the disruptions connected with these valid road projects. The tourism industry on Gozo must not be constrained to enter the upcoming summer season with a chaotic road network on this small island.”
