The first four works of art from the 43 selected in ‘The Public Art in Gozo scheme,’ have been installed at sites around Gozo. The scheme was launched by the Ministry for Gozo in late 2010 and was the first of its kind in the islands, comprising a permanent art exhibition outdoors for the benefit of local residents and visitors to Gozo.

The new works include a piece of ceramic art entitled ‘Il-Menhir’ by Kathleen Formosa, which has been placed in the Three Hills Garden at Marsalforn, the work is two metres long and was constructed from terracotta. Welcome with Flowers – Welcome to Gozo is a mosaic mural, which is 13.5 meters long, is a work by Mary Portelli and is located at Mgarr. The two other works of art have been placed in Villa Rundle Gardens – ‘Gozo Gossiping,’ a sculpture by Joe Xuereb, which is made from local limestone and is 1.8 metres high, and Serenity by Angelo Agius, which depicts a group of three children sculpted in bronze.

The Minister for Gozo, Giovanna Debono, inaugurated these works of art and praised the artists great creativity, she said that a further 13 pieces of art are due to be completed by the end of the year.

The Minister concluded by saying that this scheme, which is one of the initiatives of the Action Plan for eco-Gozo 2010 – 2012, will give the Gozitan people and all those who visit the island the opportunity to enjoy works of art on the street, and not just between the four walls of a museum, whilst also highlighting the outstanding work of local artists.

Overall 64 artists have participated in this scheme, producing a variety of works of art from both Gozo and Malta, as well as works of art produced by foreigners who reside in Gozo and Malta.
