This is the 8th consecutive year that the Office of the Commissioner for Children is organising its annual children’s rights course ‘Rights 4U.’ However this is the first year that three live-in courses are being organized due to the large amount of applications received. This has been made possible due to the support received by the HSBC Malta Foundation as well as the Ministry for Gozo.

Today, the second course was opened by the Acting Prime Minister and Minister for Gozo, Giovanna Debono. Justyne Caruana, member of the Social Affairs Committee and Mrs. Helen D’Amato, Commissioner for Children were also present.

Through this three day initiative, 45 young people aged between 13 and 15, will participate in various activities in which they will not only learn about their rights but they will also actively explore and engage in discussions about their rights.

The theme for this year’s Rights 4U Course is that of bridging generations, in light of the European Year dedicated to Active Ageing. The young participants will be carrying out two activities with the elderly who live at Dar Sant Anna and who attend the Gozo Day Centres. In this way the young people will become more aware of the contribution that older people make to society and it will increase cooperation and solidarity between generations.

The Commissioner for Children, Mrs. Helen D’Amato will be present throughout the three day event in order to increase dialogue with the young people as well as to receive feedback form the young people themselves.

The third course will also be taking place in Gozo between the 31st of August and the 2nd of September. Through this course 30 young people will participate in this important initiative.

The activities are also being partly sponsored by San Michel Table Water.
