This summer Gozo’s Emergency Response and Rescue Corps lifeguards assisted in 326 cases at Ramla Bay, Gozo, which ranged from jellyfish stings, minor wounds, sunstroke, fractures, and a case of lost child.
E.R.R.C. said that the last lifeguarding service at in Gozo was on Sunday, the 30th of September. This was due to the termination of the contract.
The lifeguarding service was possible due to financial support by the Gaia Foundation. Support is also being provided by the Ministry for Gozo – ECO Gozo, Malta Tourism Authority, Transport Malta, Police, Armed Forces of Malta, Police and the Civil Protection Department.
It is a pity that the contract was for a period of ‘time’ rather than a period of ‘need’
With the glorious weather this week, the stats above show there could be approximately fifteen incidents needing First Aid/Paramedic assistance at Ramla Bay, who will fulfil this requirement and how quickly?
I would also like to point out that the wonderful efforts of the ERRC both on sea and on land are being jeopardised by the delay of the Government to provide a base for the organisation, at present ambulances are parked outside volunteer’s homes and equipment scattered around various buildings on the Island.
