Airstrip on Gozo not a priority for the Labour Party – Muscat

Earlier this afternoon the PL Leader Dr Joseph Muscat attended a meeting with the Gozo Business Chamber in Marsalforn. During the discussions he told the businessmen present that “having an adequate link between the Gozo and Malta was important. Those present for the meeting were Labour MP Dr Justyne Caruana and the Labour candidates Franco Mercieca and Joe Cordina.
The Labour Leader said that an airstrip was not a priority for the Party, but a helicopter service, as well as a fast ferry service between Mgarr and Valletta would be considered.
Studies on a possible tunnel link between the islands would also continue Dr Muscat stated. The PL Leader asserted that during these meetings, politicians are always begged to ensure that the proposals made are implemented on time and within budget. A new Government will have a politician, who will also be Deputy Prime Minister, who will be responsible for the implementation of this roadmap.
Joseph Muscat mentioned new market opportunities for the Gozitan island, including in the education and medicine sector. He stated that “Gozo has the space for a specific institution to cater for these two sectors.”
The PL Leader also spoke about the cruise liner market, through the proposal for the development of a cruise liner passenger terminal. He added that a new Government will be providing incentives for operators in this field, so that they are encouraged to start to make stops both in Malta and in Gozo.
Michael Grech, President of the Gozo Business Chamber stated that he would like to see more political will to ensure that issues discussed are implemented on time.
He added that the Business Chamber believes that such meetings should take place on a regular basis. He also mentioned various challenges faced by Gozo and the need for strategies which differ from approaches taken in Malta. This also ensures that if prosperity is generated in Gozo, the whole country will benefit.
The main meeting was then continued behind closed doors.
Following his meeting, the PL Leader visited Arkadia in Victoria before the Political Discussion being held in Xaghra this evening.
