Joseph Muscat, Leader of the Partit Laburista (PL) attended a political activity in Xghajra yesterday, where in reply to questions from the audience he said, “nothing and no one will stop us from talking about what people want to hear. We appeal for an electoral campaign based on ideas and proposals

“The people deserve much better politics. Politics based on negativity and personal attacks benefit no one, and we believe that a new Government will be honest with the people. Where mistakes are made, they will be corrected and there will be no place for obstinacy to gain political mileage.”

Jospeh Muscat also insisted on the need to clean up politics and emphasised that, “if given the people’s trust, a new Government will introduce the Whistle Blower Act, a responsible law about party financing and will also remove time bars from cases implicating politicians, before Parliament closes for summer.”

Asked about the energy sector, Joseph Muscat stated that a new Government will close the Marsa Power Station since there is a clear and concrete way forward. “The PL is the only party who has a plan on the energy sector, whilst others do not have any idea on what exactly they are going to do,” the Labour Leader said. “At first they proposed a floating LNG terminal, then, the introduction of a night tariff, where no one as yet knows how much money the people will be saving through this measure.”

“The PL explained that through the PL plan, around 27,000 families, the majority of which are elderly, will be benefitting from 35% reduction from their utility bills. This will lead to improvement in their quality of life.”

Dr Muscat explained how the PL is presenting various proposals which will reach every level in art and culture, even those which are not so popular. The PL Leader claimed that a new Government will be establishing an art college, as well as a School of Art within the University, in order to ensure more specialisation for those who have the potential to succeed in this sector.

The Labour Leader acknowledged all students, especially the MCAST students and appealed to them not to heed those who are attacking them. “Young people are no Party’s monopoly, because they have the freedom to think. The PL is the natural home for young people.”

In reply to an MCAST student who said they had to quit due to an accessibility problem, the PL Leader asserted that persons with disabilities who find a job will also be benefiting from the disability benefit, regardless of their earnings.

Joseph Muscat mentioned the importance of the Youth guarantee for education, training and employment. “On the same lines,” he said, “a new Government will be assisting those students who pursue PhD courses whilst also giving a stipend and unemployment benefit to those people who are not in gainful employment to encourage them to take up their studies again.”

The PL Deputy Leader for Parliamentary Affairs, Louis Grech, also attended the event and spoke about the PL electoral campaign which is built on realistic proposals and based on the principle of inclusion. He emphasised that “in order for a society to be just and stable, it has to be productive, a society which would be much improved and assists those who are most vulnerable.”

Louis Grech concluded that “a new Government will be incentivising more women to join the labour market through, among other proposals, the introduction of free childcare services.”
