1. The Legion of Mary (Gozo) organised an ecumenical celebration at St Augustine’s church, Victoria, during the Octave of Prayers for Christian Unity.
On behalf of the Augustinian community, Fr Peter Paul Cachia, OSA, welcomed the congregation, including Bishop Mario Grech and the Chancellor of St Paul’s Anglican Cathedral, Canon Simon Godfrey.
In a short sermon Mgr Grech spoke on the need of evangelisation of the Gospel to everyone, while Canon Godfrey said that unity can be achieved through proper Christian education and prayer.
Bible excerpts and a testimony of faith were read by Tessa Bicker, Carole McLaren, Judith Pugh and Jacquie Vassallo.
The Chorus Urbanus, under the direction of Mro John Galea, sang various hymns, including St Francis’ hymn Make Me an Instrument of Your Peace.
2. Mgr Alfred Xuereb, assistant personal secretary to Pope Benedict visited the new historical and interactive museum being set up at St George’s Basilica in Victoria. Mgr Xuereb was shown around by project coordinator Mgr Dr. Joseph Farrugia. The museum was inaugurated last Saturday.
3. The Sannat Local Council held a sports event consisiting of a 20km Bike Race as well as a 10km race for Maltese and Gozitan athletes alike.
Athletes participating in the events were given a commemorative medal and a number of trophies were distributed, all of which were sponsored by Mr. Peter Lovewell.
Talking during the event Sannat Mayor Philip Vella said that besides providing an opportunity for cyclists and runners to practice their sport in a competivie way this event also served to promote the benefits of sporting activiites in Gozo for people of all ages.
He also encouraged parents to enrol their children in as many different sportive disciplines as possible to promote a healthy lifestyle.
