A tour of Gozo organised by the Malta Council for Culture and the Arts is taking place on Palm Sunday, the 24th of March 2013.
The tour, which will originate from Malta, is the fifth in the series of Cultural Tours organised by the Council and will focus on the cult of the Holy Week in Gozo, including a penitential procession in Qala, where there will be the opportunity to see the largest and only statue of its kind in the Maltese islands, depicting Christ brought down from the cross; the statue, which was brought over from Spain, was also at one time in Rome.
In Nadur the tour will visit a Last Supper’s display in Jewish style at the Boys’ MUSEUM as well as the parish church, where, apart from the passion processional statues, Mr Gorg Cassar will explain the cult of Holy Week on the island of Gozo.
The tour will then visit an exhibition of Sacred Art at the Banca Giuratale in Victoria, by the Gozitan artist Pawlu Camilleri Cauchi, entitled ‘Rebbiegha.’ The artist will be present at the exhibition to discuss his work.
Other places of interest included in this tour are the recently-opened museum “il-Hagar,” as well as St George’s Basilica, with its statues showing the mysteries of the Passion of Christ.
These monthly Cultural Tours are organised by the Malta Council for Culture and the Arts and have now become a part of the calendar of events which are followed by many participants who want to increase their knowledge of our Maltese heritage.
Departure from Malta will be from near the Phoenicia Hotel hotel in Floriana at 11.30am.
Tickets sell for €22 for adults and €20 for the elderly and children. Refreshments will also be served during this tour.
Booking closes at noon on Wednesday, the 20th of March, or earlier if the tour is fully booked.
Tickets may be purchased from the offices of the Malta Council for Culture and the Arts at 230 Republic Street, Valletta (further down from St George’s Square) from Monday to Friday between 8.30am and 3.30pm.
